Fire season is here. With multiple fires burning through California and in Assembly District 8, they serve as an important reminder: preparation is key. I want to share some simple but critical steps you and your family can take to be ready.
Step 1: Get Ready
Preparation starts at home. Create and maintain defensible space by keeping 100 feet clear around your property. Remove dead plants, dry leaves, and other flammable materials. Trim trees regularly, and keep combustible items away from your home.
For documenting purposes, it’s wise to take photos and videos of your home and belongings. And if you live in a high fire-risk area and rely on an electric vehicle, keep it charged in case you need to evacuate on short notice.
Step 2: Get Set
Build a Wildfire Action Plan. This includes preparing a “Go Bag” with essentials: important documents, prescriptions, clothes, food, water, and supplies for pets.
Make sure your family knows the plan—designate escape routes and set meeting points in safe locations outside the danger zone.
Step 3: Be Ready to Go
Review your wildfire action plan regularly with your family, and check your “Go Bag” to make sure everything is up to date and ready.
