Republican legislators have been forceful in warning that the study could become the foundation for a future tax they say would hit low‑ and middle‑income families the hardest. Assemblymember David Tangipa called AB 1421 “a direct assault on everyday Californians in rural portions of California,” where longer commutes are common.
